Mohn, Papaver somniferum#
Poppy (Papaver somniferum), cultivated in Austria since the Hallstatt period. In 1994 the acreage was extended to 1,700 hectares, yielding 790 kg/hectare or 1,400 t altogether. The oilseeds are used for producing bread and confectionery, the heads are used for making wreaths and bouquets. The alkaloids (opium) contained in the sap are made into narcotics. The grey poppy from the Waldviertel region is particularly well-known.
