Navis#
Navis, Tirol, municipality in the district of Innsbruck Land, alt. 1,337 m, pop. 1,846, area 64.11 km2, in the valley of the Navisbach stream. Spinning mill, bacon factory, wood processing, some tourism. Parish church by C. Holzmeister (1966/67) with carved crucifixion group by L. Bachlehner the Elder (1912/13); of the funeral chapel (former parish church), Baroque modifications by F. Penz in 1756, only the choir and the South tower have been preserved. Former chapel of Aufenstein Castle (consecration in 1330) with Gothic frescoes (14th century), North of Navis late-Gothic St. Katharina subsidiary church (first documented mention in 1404) with life-size Annunciation group (around 1340) and late Rococo high altar; Stippler chapel (around 1770). Old Wipptal valley houses with decorative gable-roofs and Baroque paintings and decorations. To the northeast of Navis (still on municipal territory), Wattener Lizum army training area.
