Ofen#
Ofen (Hungarian name: Buda), German name of the part of Budapest located on the right bank of the River Danube. Since the 13th century, site of the royal castle and of St. Matthew´s Church. Ofen was the residence of the Hungarian court, nobility and civil servants. From 1541-1686, Ofen was the seat of a Turkish Pasha and in the 18th century (under emperor Joseph II) became the capital of Hungary. In 1872 Budapest was formed from Ofen and the city of Pest on the left bank of the River Danube.
