Pressburg, Frieden von#

Pressburg, Peace of, concluded between Austria and France (Napoleon) in the Archbishop´s Palace of Pressburg (Bratislava, Slovakia) on December 26, 1805, marked the end of the Third Coalition War after Austria´s defeat in the Battle of Austerlitz (Battle of the Three Emperors) and the withdrawal of Russia and Prussia; contained extremely hard provisions for Austria: Tyrol and Vorarlberg had to be ceded to Bavaria; the rest of Vorderoesterreich (Austrian Forelands) was divided between the Napoleonic satellite states Bavaria, Wuerttemberg and Baden. The regions of Venetia, Istria, Dalmatia and Cattaro (Kotor), which Austria had obtained in 1797 (Peace of Campoformido), were given to Italy, the new French vassal state. In return, Austria received the Archdiocese of Salzburg with Berchtesgaden, but Emperor Franz II (I) had to recognize Napoleon I as emperor and recognize the kingdoms of Bavaria and Wuerttemberg.
