Presse, Die#

Presse, Die, Vienna daily newspaper founded by A. Zang in 1848, modelled on the Parisian newspapers (e.g. "La Presse"), initially promoted a liberal attitude. "Die Presse", which was published for the first time on July 3, 1848, played a decisive role in the journalistic and technological modernisation of the Austrian press, but it experienced a considerable "brain drain" when important editors left to join the "Neue Freie Presse" in 1864. "Die Presse" was owned by an Aktiengesellschaft from 1867 onwards and soon became a semi-official mouthpiece of the government but was discontinued on October 31, 1896. - After World War II, Ernst Molden founded a new newspaper under the same traditional name. It was published weekly from January 26, 1946 and was transformed into a daily on October 19, 1948. "Die Presse", which was later published by F. Molden, O. Schulmeister and by T. Chorherr and J. Kainz since 1995, advocates a liberal-conservative course and tends to promote business interests. Circulation (1998): 121,000.
