Raimundtheater#
Raimundtheater, theatre in Vienna's 6th district, established by an association of Viennese citizens in 1893; it was opened with a Zauberspiel (fairy-tale play), "Die gefesselte Phantasie" ("Fantasy fettered"), by F. Raimund, its managing director until 1896 was A. Mueller-Guttenbrunn. At first mainly popular plays were staged, later operettas took their place; between 1921 and 1924 plays were reintroduced as the main focus by the managing director R. Beer. After 1945, under managing director R. Marik (1948-1976), operetta again became very popular, with stars like J. Heesters, M. Roekk etc. A number of famous actresses and actors started their career in the Raimundtheater, e.g. H. Niese, P. Wessely, A. Hoerbiger, K. Skraup, others gave guest performances there (A. Sandrock, E. Duse). The Raimundtheater was restored and modernised in 1984/85, since 1987 it has formed part of th association of theatres, Vereinigte Buehnen Wien, concentrating on operettas and musicals.
