Rudolf, Archduke of Austria, b. Florence (Italy), Jan. 8, 1788, d. Baden (Lower Austria), July 24, 1831, from 1819 prince archbishop of Olmuetz (Olomouc), 1820 cardinal, youngest son of Emperor Leopold II. Pupil (1803-1804) and eminent patron of L. van Beethoven, who dedicated numerous compositions (opp. 58, 73, 81a, 96, 97, 106, 111, 133, 134) and the Missa solemnis (op. 123, on the occasion of R.'s enthronement as bishop of Olmuetz) to him. Patron of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien. Was himself a composer.
