Russ, Leander#
Russ, Leander, b. Vienna, Nov. 25, 1809, d. Kaltenleutgeben near Vienna, March 8, 1864, painter of landscapes, historical and genre scenes, son and pupil of Karl Russ. Studied at the Vienna Academy, travelled to the orient as a companion of the diplomat and orientalist Count A. Prokesch von Osten, 1843 stayed in Italy. Concentrated on motifs from Austrian history, painted mostly watercolours, 1841-1848 created numerous pictures for peep-show boxes for Emperor Ferdinand I depicting scenes from his reign.
