SAFE, Salzburger AG für Energiewirtschaft#
SAFE, Salzburger AG fuer Energiewirtschaft, responsible for the energy supply of 149,000 industrial and private customers (1999) in the province of Salzburg. In 1999 64 % of the share in SAFE (founded in 1920) was held by the province of Salzburg and 36 % by the Energie AG Oberoesterreich Oberoesterrreichische Kraftwerke AG (Upper Austrian Power Plants AG). SAFE owns more than 20 hydroelectric power plants with an output of 292,615 kW and has shares in 3 large-scale power plants on the River Danube. SAFE not only supplies electricity but also natural gas and district heat: More than 9,000 customers are connected to the natural gas network; in Hallein SAFE operates a district heating network which makes use of the waste heat from the papermill there; in cooperation with several biomass thermal power stations, SAFE supplies more than 1000 customers with district heating. In addition, SAFE operates various local cable television networks ( a total of 99 in 1999), which are constantly being improved and extended, for example for Internet access.
