Schallenberg, Christoph von#
b. Piberstein Palace (municipality of Ahorn, Upper Austria), Jan. 31, 1561, d. Vienna, April 25, 1597, poet. Studied in Tuebingen, Padova, Bologna and Siena, then took on the position of supervisor in the household of Archduke Matthias (from 1584); 1595 commander of the Danube fleet. Wrote Latin and German occasional and satirical poetry, one manuscript of which has been preserved (ed. by H. Hurch, 1910, reprint 1973). Combines neo-Latin poetry with elements from the traditional popular song; translated Italian songs into German.
