School Medical Service: The first instructions pertaining to hygiene in schools were included in school legislation of the early modern age, particularly in the 18th century. The 1873 decree on health care in schools led to the development of a scientific view of school hygiene (L. Burgerstein) and to the first instances of medical service in schools. In 1909 a provisional school medical service was introduced at some teacher training institutions; a legal regulation for federal secondary schools (amended in 1948 and 1960) was introduced in 1923, for primary schools and the lower levels of secondary schools in1955.
