St. Georgen am Längsee#
St. Georgen am Laengsee, Carinthia, municipality in the district of St. Veit an der Glan, alt. 537 m, pop. 3,299, area 69.78 km2, summer tourist resort (86,874 overnight stays in 1992) north east of St. Veit an der Glan. - Prison with farm attached, educational centre of the diocese of Gurk with school of office work and domestic science, Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross, summer bathing establishment; construction of sawmill plants and packaging machines. -Former Benedictine convent (founded between 1002 and 1008, closed in 1782), oldest convent in Carinthia, Renaissance arcaded courtyard, Baroque wings (1654-1658, by P. F. Carlone), many Roman relief stones from Virunum in the convent building; former abbey church (parish church) with Romanesque stepped portal and rich Baroque decoration; Romanesque-Gothic parish church at Launsdorf, wood statues (15th century), high altar (17th century); late Gothic parish church at Taggenbrunn, altars (17th and 18th centuries); Late Gothic parish church at Osterwitz with Baroque high altar (1719). Within the municipality are Hochosterwitz Castle, Niederosterwitz Castle (1541, 1645 and enlarged in the 18th century), the ruins of Taggenbrunn Castle (first documented mention in 1157, ring wall 1494), and Rottenstein Palace (around 1870) with elaborate bath house.
