St. Gilgen, province of Salzburg, municipality in the district of Salzburg-Umgebung, alt. 545 m, pop. 3,382, area 98.67 km2, summer tourist and bathing resort (487,393 overnight stays in 1992) situated on the north-west shore of Lake Wolfgangsee, most important municipality in the Salzburg part of the Salzkammergut lake district; ship landing stage. - District gendarmerie, educational centre and youth hostel of the Chamber of Labour, commercial school, federal advanced-level school, children's home, centre of pre-vocational training, cableway up to the Zwoelferhorn Peak (alt. 1,521 m). - Parish church (first documented mention in 1376, re-constructed between 1767 and1769) with late Baroque interior, burial vault of the Wrede princes (1879); pilgrimage church (1626, reconstructed in 1692) and Baroque wayside chapel on Falkenstein hill; Huettenstein Palace (1843) was built on the site of a castle ruin in romantic historicist style; house where Mozart's mother was born; Mozart memorial; Mozart well (1926); local heritage museum in the "Wetzlhaeusl" estate, which was built in 1655; museum of international music instruments; Burggrabenklamm gorge (at Lake Attersee).
