St. Johann in Tirol, Tirol, market town in the district of Kitzbuehel, alt. 659 m, pop. 7,180, area 59.15 km2, bi-seasonal tourism (721,560 overnight stays in 1992), economic centre and traffic junction in the Leukental Valley, at the foot of the Kitzbueheler Horn Mountain (alt. 1,996 m), situated at the confluence of the Fieberbrunner Ache and the Kitzbueheler Ache Rivers. - District forest inspectorate, district office of public works, hospital, Wintersteller barracks, hydrographic service, Bundesgymnasium secondary school and Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium secondary school, school of tourism, agricultural school, 2 youth homes, recreation centre, summer toboggan run, airfield, Harschbichl single rope railway (up to the Alpine pasture Angereralm and Harschbichl mountain, alt. 1,604 m); wood industry (chipboard works), wide range of industry and trade. - Copper mining in the 16th and 17th centuries. Baroque parish church (1723-1728) with twin-towered façade, vault paintings (1727, by S. B. Faistenberger) and altar paintings (by J. Zanusi); St. Anthony chapel (1669-1674), St. Nicholas church (former hospital church) in Weitau (1262) with late Gothic stained glass (2nd half of the 15th century), ceiling fresco (by S. B. Faistenberger), murals (1745, by J. A. Moelk) and the oldest bell in Tirol (1262); old Einhof farmhouses (18th century); starting point of mountaineering tours to the Wilder Kaiser Mountains.
