St. Margarethen im Burgenland#
St. Margarethen im Burgenland, Burgenland, market town in the district of Eisenstadt-Umgebung, alt. 151 m, pop. 2,608, area 26.54 km2, situated on the Nodbach stream, west of Rust; known for its lime sand stone quarries ( Leitha Limestone), which were used as building material for most of the sumptuous buildings on the Wiener Ringstrasse. - Leisure centre, "Maerchenwald" (leisure and animal park), sculptors' symposium ( Bildhauersymposion St. Margarethen, Internationales) since 1959, Passion Plays (since 1961) in the Roemersteinbruch quarry (every 5 years, an Easter Festival has been held since 1996); wine growing, wineries and wine trade; construction trade, production of spice extracts. - Catholic parish church (13th /14th centuries, enlarged 1959/1960) with beautiful sandstone pulpit (end of 17th century); ossuary (14th century); pillory (17th century); Burghof (first documented mention in the 16th century).
