Stahlbeton#
Concrete, Reinforced, quickly became popular as "ferroconcrete" in Austria for constructing bridges, industrial, office and representative buildings from the turn of the century (in Vienna: Zacherl House by J. Plečnik, 1904; Gerngross department store 1904; granary on Handelskai quay, 1911/13); even architects of the Jugendstil period, such as O. Wagner (Postsparkasse=Postal Savings Bank, Kirche Am Steinhof=Steinhof Hospital Church), Josef Hoffmann (Purkersdorf Sanatorium) and A. Loos (House on Michaelerplatz square) used reinforced concrete. In the course of the 20th century steel construction has gained more and more ground, especially in civil engineering, while a variety of building materials continues to be used for structural engineering.
