Roads: The Austrian road network consists of federal roads, provincial roads, district roads, municipal roads and private roads. Federal roads are built and maintained from federal revenue, levied in the form of the mineral oil tax, engine-related insurance tax, the earmarked road levy and the supplementary petroleum levy (investments in 1994 approx. ATS 16,000 million). The supreme authority for road construction is the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs. High-performance routes are partly financed by special companies ( Alpen Strassen AG, ASFINAG).
Of the total road network of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy (approx.
124,000 km) about a fifth lay on Austrian territory in 1918. In
1994 the Austrian network of roads comprised more than
200,000 km, of which 1,588.8 km were Autobahn,
195.4 km express roads (Schnellstrassen), 9,947.5 km federal
roads (Bundesstrassen), 19,754.9 km provincial roads
(Landesstrassen) and more than 100,000 km other roads (of which
2,510 km in Vienna). Special importance also attaches to the
extensive network of forest and agricultural roads.
