Strafvollzugsanstalten#
Penal Institutions, institutions in which offenders serve prison sentences. Special institutions are provided for juveniles, mentally deranged persons, tuberculosis sufferers, persons convicted for negligence, etc. Female and male prisoners are separated. Austria currently (1996) has the following penal institutions: one in each provincial capital, in Garsten, Gerasdorf (juveniles), Goellersdorf (mentally deranged offenders), Hirtenberg, Korneuburg, Leoben, Ried, Schwarzau am Steinfeld (women), Sonnberg, Stein, Steyr, Suben and Wels. The execution of sentences is regulated in the Strafvollzugsgesetz act of 1969, which has since undergone several amendments. As per October 31, 1996 1,536 persons in custody pending trial and 4,874 prisoners were detained in Austrian penal institutions. At the same time 3,540 persons were employed in penal institutions, including administrative officers.
