Sulzer, Salomon#

Sulzer, Salomon, b. Hohenems (Vorarlberg), March 30, 1804, d. Vienna, Jan. 17, 1890, Jewish cantor and composer. From 1820 cantor at Hohenems, from 1825 in Vienna. His collection "Schir Zion" (2 volumes, 1840/65), the oldest detailed musical description of the liturgical year, has been of decisive importance to synagogical singing to this day. Was also widely known for his beautiful low tenor voice. His spirited style of singing was an example to subsequent generations of cantors. The "Vienna Rites", a modified form of the Jewish religious service, was developed by S. and I. N. Mannheimer.
