Tschernembl, Georg Erasmus Freiherr von#
b. Schwertberg (Upper Austria), Jan. 26, 1567, d. Geneva (Switzerland), Nov. 18, 1626, Calvinist theologian. Spokesman of the Austrian Estates above the Enns at the time of the feud between Rudolf II and Matthias. In 1608 T. led the movement of Horn against King Matthias and wanted to create an association of the Austrian Estates against the Habsburgs. In 1619, under his influence, the Estates of Upper Austria refused to pay tribute to Ferdinand II and on Aug. 16, 1619 they formed an alliance with the "Bohemian Confederation". T. was forced to go into exile to Geneva (via Prague and the Palatinate), where he died in poverty.
