Defence, Ministry of, official name: Federal Ministry for National Defence; before 1918 k. u. k. (Royal and Imperial War Ministry ( Kriegsministerium) for the whole of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, and also Ministry of National Defence for the Austrian part and by analogy for the Hungarian half of the Empire; 1918-1920: State Office for the Army; 1920-1936: Federal Ministry of the Army; 1936-1938: Federal Ministry of National Defence. In 1945, national defence was entrusted to an Under-State Secretary for Military Affairs at the State Chancellery (27 April, 1945-20 December, 1945). From 20 December, 1945 to 14 July, 1956, the formation of Federal Armed Forces was in the hands of the Office for National Defence, which was then a section of the Federal Chancellery. The Federal Ministry for National Defence was created on 15 July, 1956.
The Ministry of Defence is sub-divided into 4 sections and the General
Troops Inspectorate (which also has section status) and deals with the
following in particular: command, arms and equipment, military
technology, military building and construction and all other matters
relevant to the military sector. The Ministry of Defence has a number
of subordinate offices and commands, such as the Museum of Military
