Vomp#

Vomp, Tirol, municipality in the district of Schwaz, alt. 563 m, pop. 3,772, area 182,61 km2, in the Lower Inn Valley at the foot of the Karwendel Mountains, on the North bank of the River Inn, near Schwaz, industry and trade. -Autobahn maintenance depot, sheltered workshop; 2,073 persons employed (1991), about 61% of which in the production sector: electrical appliances, knitwear, confectionery, building firms; summer tourism (74,678 overnight stays in 1992). - first documented mention 930; Gothic parish church (first documented mention 1138, built around 1480), after a fire in 1809 it was rebuilt in classicist style (frescoes, altars in 1820); Benedictine monastery of Sankt Georgenberg-Fiecht (transferred from Georgenberg Hill to Vomp after a fire in 1705, constructed between 1707-1710); Baroque collegiate church (1741-1750) with stucco work, frescoes, high altar (1745) and tabernacle, pews with reliefs, museum; Sigmundslust Castle (built between 1460 and 1470 as hunting seat, chapel consecrated in 1582) and Mitterhart Castle (around 1615-1620); Hohe Bruecke (bridge leading to Sankt Georgenberg, constructed in 1497). The first printing shop in Tirol was operated in Vomp between 1520 and 1526.
