Wehrkirchen#
Fortified Churches, mostly situated in elevated places, extended and fortified along with their cemeteries for defensive purposes. Originated in the 15th century because of the invasions of Carinthia and Styria by the Turks; there are fewer fortified churches in the western parts of Austria. In some villages, e.g. Perchtoldsdorf (Lower Austria), only the part around the church was fortified.
