Windisch#
Windisch, Bavarian-Austrian pronunciation of the Middle High German word "wendisch" meaning "Slavonic"; it is still extant in the names of various Austrian municipalities such as Windisch Bleiberg, Windischgarsten or Windisch Minihof. The Slavists B. Kopitar, F. S. Metelko and the Carinthian linguist and folklorist U. Jarnik (1784-1844) introduced the word "slowenisch" (Slovenian) into standard German, but in colloquial German "windisch" remained in use as a name for the dialects of the Carinthian and Lower Styrian Slovenes, which contain various loan words from German.
