Windischgarsten#
Windischgarsten, Upper Austria, market town in the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems, alt. 602 m, pop. 2,104, area 4.91 km2, climatic health and bi-seasonal tourist resort (85,207 overnight stays in 1992) near the confluence of the Rivers Dambach and Teichl, surrounded by the Warscheneck Mountains, the Sensengebirge Mountains and the Haller Mauern Mountain Range. - District Court, Youth Welfare Centre of the District Administration of Kirchdorf an der Krems, Caritas welfare centre, workshop for handicapped people, health and social insurance office, summer toboggan run, recreation homes, Skihauptschule (secondary school for trainee skiers); building and construction industry, trade (especially wood processing). - Excavated Roman finds; parish church (first documented mention 1119), re-built 1463, with late-Gothic choir and tower, Rococo side altars (around 1770), Baroque gravestones on the outer walls; Calvary chapel (1843); market fountain (1745); 17th century town houses with Baroque façades. Nearby sulfur, Glauber's salt and brine springs, mud baths.
