Economic Affairs, Ministry of, full name: Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (since 2000), founded as Ministry of Trade in 1848. In 1966, an independent Federal Ministry of Building and Engineering was founded, which was merged with the Federal Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Industry in 1966 and became the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Ministry of Economic Affairs is located in the government building on Stubenring street in Vienna. Its 10 sections are divided up into special departments such as economic policy, foreign economic policy and European integration, trade and industry, engineering and mining authorities, industry, technology and innovation, federal building construction, employment policy and fundamental issues in economic and social policy, tourism and leisure economics, energy, central labour inspectorate, labour law and general social policy, employment policy and fundamental social policy issues.
Institutions subordinate to the Ministry of Economic Affairs include
the Austrian Labour Market Service (AMS), the Federal Authority of
Weights, Measures and Surveying, the Labour Inspectorates and the
Burghauptmannschaft in Vienna (responsible for structural alterations
of the Imperial Palace and other historical buildings). The
administration of Schoenbrunn Zoo and the federal real estate
administration have been spun off as separate companies.
