Charlottesville#

Charlottesville was founded in 1762 along a trade route called „Three Notched Road“, today‘s U.S. Route 250, in the center of Virginia and has today a population of about 50.000.

The city was named after the wife of George III., King of Great Britain and Ireland. Unlike much of Virginia, Charlottesville was spared the afflictions of the American Civil War and was later surrendered to spare the town from being burnt.

Charlottesville is home to numerous famous persons, from historic figures like Thomas Jefferson to renowned poets like Edgar Allan Poe, William Faulkner or novelist John Grisham to celebrated movie stars like Sissy Spacek and Sam Shepard.
