In 1946 the Philippines finally achieved independence and developed into the leading economy in Southeast Asia, until Ferdinand Marcos took over in 1965. The following 20 years of dictatorship bleed the country, whereby the 3.000 pairs of shoes of Imelda Marcos, the wife of the president, represented only the summit of a huge corruption scandal. Since the fall of the dictator the Philippines again have a democratic regime with a president at the top, based on the model of the USA. The democratic regime is still fragile as the roots of corruption run deep. But the kind islanders bounce back: They are masters of improvisation, living according to the motto: bahala na, "That'll go off all right".
1946 erhielten die Philippinen ihre endgültige Unabhängigkeit und entwickelten sich zur führenden Wirtschaftsnation Südostasiens, bis 1965 Ferdinand Marcos an die Macht kam. Die folgenden 20 Jahre Diktatur bluteten das Land vollkommen aus, wobei die legendären 3000 Paar Schuhe von Präsidentengattin Imelda Marcos nur die Spitze eines gigantischen Korruptionseisberges waren. Seit dem Sturz des Diktators haben die Philippinen wieder eine demokratische Staatsform nach dem Vorbild der USA mit einem Präsidenten an der Spitze. Sie steht jedoch auf tönernen Beinen, denn die Korruption ist nach wie vor tief verwurzelt. Doch die liebenswürdigen Inselbewohner lassen sich nicht unterkriegen: Sie sind Meister der Improvisation, die nach dem Motto leben: bahala na, „es wird schon irgendwie gut werden“.
