The Petrified Forest on the Island of Lesvos#
In the Southwestern part of the island, in a widespread barren valley, dozens of petrified trees can be found. The trunks - some standing, some lying - comprise 20 million year old pines and sequoias. A few miles from this spectacular site, the prehistoric museum of Sigri offers the visitor all the background information on the volcanic disaster which preserved fragments of the exuberant Miocene vegetation until our time.
