Fernkorn, Anton Dominik von#

b. Erfurt (Germany), March 17, 1813, d. Vienna, Nov. 16, 1878, sculptor. Learned many techniques himself in the royal ore foundry in Munich, subsequently apprenticed to L. v. Schwanthaler. called to Vienna by the founder J. Glanz. His best-known works include the equestrian statues of Archduke Karl (1853-1859) and of Prince Eugène (1860-1865), on Heldenplatz in Vienna. From 1855-1858 he created a monument at Aspern in remembrance of the Austrian soldiers killed in the battle of Aspern in 1809 ("Loewe von Aspern"). also worked as a portraitist and was the most important monumental sculptor of Austrian historicism.
