Joseph I#

Joseph I, b. Vienna, July 26, 1678, d. Vienna, April 17, 1711, Emperor, eldest son of and successor to Leopold I, 1687 King of Hungary, 1688 King of Bohemia, 1690 King of the Romans, 1705-1711 Holy Roman Emperor. Continued the War of the Spanish Succession, fought successfully against the Hungarian Kuruc rebels ( Kuruc invasions), who deposed him formally in 1707. Though a devout Catholic J. showed understanding for the Protestants. His death (smallpox) deprived the Habsburgs of the Spanish Succession. According to the Pragmatic Sanction his two daughters were next in line of succession after the daughters of his younger brother, Karl VI.
