Kaolin#
Kaolin, soft fine-grained clay, "china clay". The mining of kaolin started at the beginning of the19th century. Originally it was used in the ceramics industry, today it is mainly used as filling material in the paper, plastics and paint industry. Mined at Kriechbaum-Weinzierl near Schwertberg (Upper Austria, open-cast and underground mining ) and in Aspang-Zoebern (Lower Austria, open-cast mining). 1993 output: 341,956 tonnes of crude kaolin.
