Leonhard von Keutschach#
b. Viktring (?; municipality of Klagenfurt, Carinthia), around 1442, d. Salzburg, June 8, 1519, ecclesiastical dignitary. Canon and provost of Eberndorf Abbey in Jauntal, 1490 provost, 1495 Archbishop of Salzburg. Secularized the chapter, dedicated his work to the economic improvement of the archdiocese; gold and silver mining industry thrived under him in the villages of Gastein and Rauris, and the salt industry prospered. Policy of ruthless nepotism; in 1498 exiled the Jews and had all synagogues in Salzburg and Hallein destroyed. 1511 broke the civilian resistance movement but lost influence in the Habsburg lands. Had Hohensalzburg Castle enlarged, had a barrel-organ built (Salzburger Stier) and renovated the ancient Roman road across the Radstaedter Tauern in the Alps.
