b. April 26, 121, d. near Sremska Mitrovica, Yugoslavia (then Sirmium), March 17, 180, Roman Emperor 161 to 180 A.D. Highly educated and a follower of stoic philosophy, he is called the "philosopher emperor". He is depicted in the only equestrian statue of antique Rome still extant. He personally led the fight against the invading Marcomanni and other Germanic tribes in the Austrian area; scenes from these wars can be seen on the Marcus Aurelius Column in Rome. In Carnuntum he wrote parts of his "Meditations" about a ruler's responsibility in the Greek language.
