Stammel, Joseph Thaddäus#
Stammel, Joseph Thaddaeus, baptized Graz (Styria), Nov. 9, 1695, d. Monastery of Admont (Styria), Dec. 21, 1765, sculptor. Main representative of Austrian wood sculpture in the late Baroque; from 1718 stay in Rome, from 1726 sculptor at the Monastery of Admont. His preference for abundant forms and movements reflects his commitment to the late Gothic tradition. A master of detail, he was at the peak of his creative powers when he furbished the library of the Admont Monastery.
