Thörl#
Thoerl, Styria, municipality in the district of Bruck an der Mur, alt. 640 m, pop. 2,166, area 65.28 km2, industrial town on the Thoerlbach Stream, south of Aflenz (health resort), on the road to Mariazell. - Metal processing industry (special-purpose wires, construction steel), wood processing industry. - Thoerl is one of the oldest metal processing towns in Styria: forge hammers were produced there from the 14th century, armourers worked in the town from 1469; overlooking the town are the Schachenstein ruins (1471); castle, originally built as a roadblock in the 2nd half of the 15th century, annexes from around 1630 and 1740, in the west tower, the Barbarakapelle (Chapel of St. Barbara, built in 1740) with ceiling frescoes and 2 altarpieces by J. A. Moelk, in the central building, medieval tower with gate; parish church (1962/1963); roadside chapel with late Gothic carved crucifixion group (around 1515).
