Wien, Wienfluss#

Wien, River, Lower Austria/Vienna, western tributary to the Danube Canal, 32 km long, mean discharge: 1.1 m3/sec. (at Vienna-Kennedybruecke bridge). Alongside the River Danube and the Danube Canal, the River Wien is one of the elements typical of the Vienna landscape. Originating as "Duerre Wien" south of Rekawinkel (388 m) in the Vienna Woods (Lower Austria), on its way towards Vienna the river flows past Pressbaum (315 m), passes through Lake Wienerwaldsee and by Purkersdorf (248 m) and reaches the Vienna area at Weidlingau (flood reservoir). The River Wien flows some 16 km on Viennese ground, forming several district borders (13/14, 12/15, 5/6, 4/6, 1/4, 1/3), passing through the Stadtpark and discharging into the Danube Canal at the Urania observatory. The River Wien was regulated and covered in several places (1897-1906) when O. Wagner undertook the construction of the Vienna Stadtbahn line, which for the most part follows the bed of the river. The river was also vaulted in other places, for example under the Naschmarkt market. Among the numerous bridges arching the river is the Kennedybruecke bridge in Hietzing. Major tributary streams: Tullnerbach, Gablitzbach, Mauerbach, and Halterbach from the north and Kalte Wien, Dambach, Deutschwaldbach, and Rotwasser from the South. The River Wiental water pipeline transports water from Lake Wienerwaldsee (Wiental waterworks) to the west of the city. Several traffic lines pass through the valley of the River Wien: the Western Railway, the Vienna Underground Railway line U 4 (on the route of the earlier Stadtbahn), and the Western autobahn (A 1), which runs into the Wientalstrasse at Auhof.
