The road to Konso leads through the settlement zone of the Borana, a tribe belonging to the group of the Oromo peoples, which represent the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia with almost 40%. Here, the ancient Gada system is still alive. It associates each male individual to a particular generation group, each lasting 8 years. Each phase is associated with certain activities and social roles. With the transition from the 4th to the 5th phase, the Oromo man becomes a proper man. After a ceremonial circumcision, he and his group undertake a campaign of killing, which once accounted for the power of the Oromo people. In doing so, they expanded their territory every eight years, and at times even conquered parts of the Christian highlands. After 10 phases the man quits the society at the age of 80 years. Anyone who reaches this age is no longer regarded as a full member and also does not receive any special funeral.
Der Weg nach Konso führt durch das Siedlungsgebiet der Borana, einem Stamm, der zur Gruppe der Oromo-Völker gehört, die mit knapp 40 % die größte Ethnie Äthiopiens stellen. Hier ist das uralte Gada-System noch immer lebendig. Es ordnet jedes männliche Individuum einer bestimmten Generationsgruppe zu, die jeweils 8 Jahre lang dauert. Jede Stufe ist mit bestimmten Tätigkeiten und sozialen Rollen verbunden. Mit dem Übergang von der 4 zur 5. Stufe wird der Oromo zum richtigen Mann. Nach einer zeremoniellen Beschneidung unternimmt er mit seiner Gruppe einen Tötungsfeldzug, der einst die Schlagkraft der Oromo ausmachte. Dadurch erweiterten sie alle 8 Jahre ihr Gebiet und eroberten zeitweise sogar Teile des christlichen Hochlandes. Nach 10 Stufen verlässt der Mann im Alter von 80 Jahren die Gesellschaft. Wer dieses Alter erreicht, gilt nicht mehr als vollwertiges Mitglied und erhält auch kein besonderes Begräbnis.
