Almaty, which has a population of 1.5 million, is still the undisputed cultural and economic centre of Kazakhstan, even though the dignity of being the capital was passed on to Astana in the far north in 1997. Officially, the shift of the capital was justified by the earthquake risk and the lack of space for new construction projects. The true reason, however, was presumably due to President Nazarbayev coming from the north and his conflict with the local elites of Almaty.
Das 1,5 Millionen Einwohner zählende Almaty ist bis heute Kasachstans unbestrittenes kulturelles und wirtschaftliches Zentrum, auch wenn die Hauptstadtwürden 1997 an das weit nördlich gelegene Astana übergingen. Offiziell wurde der Hauptstadtwechsel mit der Erdbebengefährdung und der Platzknappheit für neue Bauprojekte begründet. Die wahre Ursache lag aber vermutlich an der Abstammung von Präsident Nasarbajew aus dem Norden und seinem Konflikt mit den lokalen Eliten von Almaty.
