Aspendos, Side's permanent rival, can not impress with the biggest ancient theatre but with the most beautiful and best preserved one. The stage wall still gives some idea of the atmosphere that once mesmerized its 15,000 spectators. A legend tells the story of the rivalry among two Aspendic architects commissioned to build the theatre and the aqueduct. The motivation was high, because the king had promised his beautiful daughter to the one who would succeed in the most imposing building of the city. When the aqueduct and the theatre were completed, the king was in a quandary. So he decided to cut his daughter in half. Nevertheless, there was a happy ending. One of the architects relinquished out of love and as a result he not only won over the beautiful princess, but also the country in the end.
Als ewige Rivalin von Side kann Aspendos zwar nicht mit dem größten, dafür aber mit dem schönsten und best erhaltenem Theater der Antike beeindrucken. Die Bühnenwand lässt noch etwas von der Stimmung erahnen, die einst die 15.000 Zuschauer fesselte. Eine Legende erzählt die Geschichte von der Rivalität zweier aspendischer Baumeister, die mit der Errichtung des Theaters und des Aquädukts beauftragt waren. Die Motivation war groß, hatte doch der König jenem seine schöne Tochter versprochen, dem das imposanteste Bauwerk der Stadt gelingen würde. Als Aquädukt und Theater vollendet waren, konnte sich der König nicht entscheiden. Da beschloss er, seine Tochter zu halbieren. Trotzdem gab es ein Happy End. Einer der Architekten verzichtete aus Liebe und gewann so am Ende nicht nur die schöne Königstochter, sondern auch das Land für sich.
