The Aphrodite's island was formed 20 million years ago, when the clash of the Eurasian and African continental plate lifted the Troodos Mountains above the water surface. Today, the Olympos, which is almost 2000 m high, is Cyprus' highest point. To the north, the Kyrenia mountains soars about 1000 meters. In between lie fertile alluvial plains, where vegetables, citrus fruits and olive trees thrive. However, agriculture plays hardly a role in the economic performance of the country. Especially in South Cyprus tourism and service provider industry are the main source of income. The living standard is significantly higher than in Greece - even after the financial crisis of 2012, which is meanwhile overcome.
Die Insel der Aphrodite entstand vor 20 Millionen Jahren, als der Zusammenstoß von eurasischer und afrikanischer Kontinentalplatte das Troodos-Gebirge über den Wasserspiegel hob. Heute bildet der knapp 2000 m hohe Olympos Zyperns höchsten Punkt. Im Norden erstreckt sich das Kyrene-Gebirge etwa 1000 m hoch in den Himmel. Dazwischen liegen fruchtbare Schwemmlandebenen, auf denen Gemüse, Zitrusfrüchte und Olivenbäume gedeihen. Der Ackerbau spielt jedoch für die Wirtschaftsleistung des Landes kaum eine Rolle. Vielmehr lebt vor allem Südzypern von Tourismus und Dienstleistung. Der Lebensstandard liegt deutlich höher als in Griechenland – auch nach der mittlerweile überstandenen Finanzkrise von 2012.
