Gleich neben den Ruinen des antiken Gortys erhebt sich die Apsis der Tituskirche, die jedoch aus byzantinischer Zeit stammt. Titus, der mit dem Apostel Paulus nach Kreta kam, wurde zum ersten Missionar der Insel. Zentrum seines Wirkens war die damalige Weltstadt Gortys. Lange hat man hier das Christentum jedoch nicht gepredigt, denn mit der Eroberung Kretas durch arabische Sarazenen im 9. Jahrhundert wurde die Stadt verlassen.
Right next to the ruins of ancient Gortys stands the apse of the Titus church, which dates from Byzantine times. Titus, who came to Crete with the Apostle Paul, became the island's first missionary. At the center of his work was the cosmopolitan city of Gortys. However, Christianity was not preached here for a long time, because after the conquest of Crete by Arab Saracens in the 9th century the city was left by everyone.
