Kein Ort in Irland kommt ohne seinen Nationalheiligen aus. Um das Jahr 400 verschleppten irische Piraten den 16-jährigen Patrick aus dem römischen Britannien als Sklaven nach Irland. Dort ereilte ihn offenbar der Ruf des Herrn. Nach seiner Flucht und mehreren Jahren des Reisens kehrte er 432 als Bischof auf die Insel zurück. Seine Missionstätigkeit war von durchschlagendem Erfolg gekrönt. Anhand eines dreiblättrigen Kleeblatts soll er den irischen Königen die Dreifaltigkeit erklärt haben. Seitdem ist die Pflanze Irlands Nationalsymbol. An Patricks Todestag, dem 17. März, feiern alle Iren weltweit ihren Heiligen mit viel Grün, vielen Kleeblättern und noch viel mehr Alkohol. Im Zentrum Dublins ist dem eifrigen Apostel eine Kathedrale gewidmet.
No place in Ireland can manage without its national saint. Around the year 400, Irish pirates abducted 16-year-old Patrick from Roman Britain to Ireland as a slave. There, apparently, god called him. After his escape and several years of traveling, he returned back to the island as a bishop in 432. His missionary work was a great success. On the basis of a trifoliate cloverleaf he is said to have explained the trinity to the Irish kings. Since then, the plant is Ireland's national symbol. On Patrick's obit, March 17, all Irishmen around the world celebrate their saint with much verdure, many shamrocks and even more alcohol. In the center of Dublin a cathedral is dedicated to the avid apostle.
