Tarantos Stahlwerke sind wahre Giftschleudern und gehören zu den schmutzigsten Industrieanlagen Europas. Die triste Lage hat sich wohl auf die Altstadt übertragen, die als trauriges Synonym für die schwierige wirtschaftliche Lage im Süden Italiens steht. Zudem läuft hier nichts ohne die Organisation der eleganten Herren hinter dunkler Sonnenbrille, die hier Sacra Corona Unita heißt, übersetzt 'Heilige, vereinigte Krone'. Die geschäftlichen Schwerpunkte der apulischen Mafia liegen im Drogenhandel, der Zwangsprostitution und der Einschleusung albanischer Einwanderer.
