Elisabeth Ernst-McNeil was born in England and attended schools in England and Scotland.

She studied German, French and prehistoric archaeology at the University of Edinburgh.

In addition she studied in 1967 at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich and 1968 at the University of Graz.

After graduation in Edinburgh (1969) she worked in an import-export firm in Graz and in 1972 she started teaching both in the English Department and the Department of Translation Studies at the University of Graz, retiring in 2004.
