Es ist ein Schnee gefallen#
The song Es ist ein Schnee gefallen was noted for the first time in Austria in the Lutebook of Jakob Thurner (ca 1524). This is one of the oldest German Lute Tabulatures and can be divided into two parts both according to its contents as well as according to its notation. Es ist ein Schnee gefallen belongs to the first part which presents hitherto unknown songs. Jakob Thurner obviously designed the manuscript as a songbook, i.e. as accompaniment for a singer. Since Thurner was registered as a student at the University of Vienna and lived nearby, we can assume that the songs he included were sung on serious occasions but mostly during the carefree activities of student life.
