Gregorian chant #
The term Gregorian Chant has been used for centuries but is actually misleading because Pope Gregory the Great († 604) had nothing to do with its creation.
This repertoire of ecclesiastical chants (in part remaining the same for every day and in part chaninging according to church festivals) is much more the product of a process that developed over several centuries. We can also identify both local influences and temporal developments. The first attempts at standardizing the chants dates back to the days of Charlemagne who commanded the use of the Roman liturgy and with it the Roman chants in Frankenreich. The Video shows the monks of St. Georgenberg-Fiecht (Tyrol) singing Gregorian chant. (E. Stadler)
