219The Expeditio litteraria ad Polum Arcticum Figure 10 Maximilian Hell accompanied by his principal works and allegorical imagery Copperplate by the Augsburg miniature artist Johann Esaias Nilson (1721–88), based on a drawing by Wenzel Pohl (1720–90). Two versions of the copperplate exist. The earlier version lacks the “inscriptions” Religione and Scientia. These were, however, explicitly asked for by Hell, along with other minor changes in the extant drafts of two letters, undated and without explicit mention of recipients, but clearly addressed to Pohl and Nilson.
