Deutsch, Julius#
b. Lackenbach (Burgenland), Feb. 2, 1884, d. Vienna, Jan. 17, 1968, Social Democratic politician. 1920-1933 member of the Nationalrat and 1920-1932 parliamentary commissioner of the military. As Unterstaatssekretaer (1918-1919) D. organised the Deutschoesterreichische Volkswehr (peoples' army); was Staatssekretaer for the military from 1919-1920 and in 1923/1924 he organised the Republikanischer Schutzbund, which consisted mainly of members of the Volkswehr; he was the representative of the Schutzbund until 1934. During the February 1934 Uprising fled to Bruenn (Brno), then served as General of Republican troops in the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939, after which he went to France and in 1940 to the USA. In 1946 D. returned to Austria and was head of the "Sozialistische Verlagsanstalten" (socialist publishing group); he was, however, unable to establish himself in politics again.
