Hebammen#
Midwifery: from the Middle Ages until the 18th century midwives were repeatedly persecuted as "witches". From 1643, beginnings of a regulated education programme for midwives in Vienna. In the 20th century, midwifery was regulated by the Midwifery Act of 1925, since 1994 by federal law. The 'Matura' (Austrian school-leaving certificate) is required for attending the college of midwifery. Midwives are organised in the Oesterreichisches Hebammen-Gremium, a corporation under public law.
